Tower of London houses England's crown Jewels which are guarded by the "Beefeaters"
The tower of London is located East of the City of London, on the north bank of the River Thames.
for London's royal family centuries ago. The fortress, surrounded by a dry moat, soon became a prison. It has been added onto over many years.
Some of its more illustrious inmates include Anne Boleyn, Sir Thomas More, Lady Jane Grey, Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I (when she was still a princess).
Many prisoners entered through the "Traitor's Gate" and many were executed here.
Today the site houses the crown jewels and is a major tourist attraction.
The Yeomen of the Guard, dressed in Tudor garb, still watch over the Tower today. They were responsible for looking after any prisoners at the Tower and safeguarding but they act as tour guides and are a tourist attraction in their own right.
There are twelve Yeomen Warders. Their nickname is "Beefeater".
