Mother teresa of Calcutta was born in Albania.
At the age of 18, she received her training in Ireland and India. She was born with the name Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu but in 1931, she took her religious title. In September of 1946, she felt inspired by God to serve the poorest of the poor who live in the streets of India. She loved India so much that she became a citizen in 1948. Later, she became an independent nun, continuing to share her life with the poor, the sick and the hungry of Calcutta, India. She began her work in India by teaching the children of the streets how to read. In 1950, she began to care for lepers. She also opened schools and homes for poor and abandoned children. She established a congregation called the Missionaries of Charity.
Hers was a message of love. Her work demonstrates that love in action is service. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 which she reluctantly accepted on behalf of the "poorest of the poor". In August, 1997 she was called home to heaven. For her boundless charity and energy, she will always be remembered and deeply loved by all.
