Kunga the gorilla is happy! His name means "peacemaker". Today is Fathers Day crafts day in his forest. His family made today a very happy day for Kunga. How will you make your dad just as happy on Fathers Day as Kunga is?
McAveler, soon it will be Fathers Day crafts time again here where we live! How did get started, anyway?
Well, Mimi, some people think that long ago, a boy with the name of Elmusu wished his dad would live a long, healthy life. He showed his appreciation for his father by making a card out of clay and writing his message on it.
What happened to Elmusu and his father, McAveler?
No one knows. That was a long time ago. But the tradition of having a special day to honor our fathers has continued through the years around the world.
Father’s Day in the United States started with a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd. She thought up the Father’s Day celebration while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.
Sonora was raised by her widowed father after Sonora’s mother died. Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. Since he was born in June, she chose to celebrate Father’s Day on the 19th of June in Spokane, Washington. Now we celebrate Fathers Day on the third Sunday each June.
What special things can we do to show our dad how much we love him, McAveler?
Well, he loves pizza. Maybe we should make him a Fathers Day pizza. What do you think?
Sure. He has a sweet tooth, right? And he loves licorice candy. Let's make him a potfull of luscious licorice. It's delicious and some people think licorice is actually good for our health, as long as we don't eat lots of sugar with it.
A Message From Chico Chihuahua
Kids, please don't give foods like licorice candy and other sweets or human foods to your puppies on Fathers Day or any other day. It isn't good for us and it can make us unhealthy or even make us ill.
And be sure to brush your teeth after you eat sweets of any kind.
