A copper pennies craft activity to copper plate a nail. Almost like turning lead into gold! Amaze your friends by making it look like you can turn iron into

Copper penniesHere's what you need

Vinegar

Small glass

10-15 dull pennies

A big nail

Table salt

Steel wool

Soap

Water

Paper towel

Copper plated nailInstructions

Put the dull pennies into a small glass and pour in enough vinegar to cover them.

Sprinkle in a few good shakes of table salt and swish the glass around. The vinegar and salt will clean up the pennies by dissolving the surface corrosion and leaving them bright and shiny.

Your solution now contains salt, vinegar, and some copper!

Clean your nail with steel wool, soap, and water. Rinse thoroughly in clean water. What color is the nail now?

Tightly and completely wrap the nail in a small piece of paper towel and put the nail into your vinegar solution.

Look at the nail after ten minutes.

What color is it now?

What is the nail covered with?

Why?

This is called copper plating and you did it!
